Aftercare in the UK After Surgery in Istanbul: How It Actually Works

The question that should decide your clinic. What good remote aftercare looks like — and your GP's real role.

"But who looks after me when I'm home?" is the single best question a UK patient can ask — and the answer separates real practices from package operations more reliably than any price list.

What structured remote aftercare looks like

  • Scheduled photo reviews at set intervals — typically around days 10–14, then monthly through scar maturation — reviewed by the operating surgeon, not a coordinator.
  • A direct line for the unscheduled: "is this normal?" deserves an answer in hours, from the person who did the operation. (Usually the answer is yes; the value is hearing it fast.)
  • Written guidance you can share: your operation notes and aftercare instructions in English, GP-ready.
  • An honest escalation protocol, in writing, before you book: what's watch-and-wait, what your GP should see, what warrants urgent local care, and what the practice organises if a planned return is needed.

Your GP's role, realistically

Your GP didn't choose your surgery and isn't responsible for its results — but they remain your NHS front door for anything acute, and most are pragmatic when you arrive with proper documentation rather than mystery. Register the facts: tell them what you had done, hand over the notes, and the relationship works. (Emergencies, as ever, go to A&E — surgery abroad doesn't change that, and no honest clinic pretends otherwise.)

The red flags, for contrast

A clinic that answers "aftercare?" with "you'll be fine" · follow-up that means a satisfaction survey · no named protocol for problems · silence after the balance clears. Every rescue patient seen here recognised these — afterwards.

The standard to demand

Ask any clinic — this one included — to describe the aftercare protocol in writing, before you commit. The answer you get, and the speed you get it, tells you what the after-sales reality will be. That test is free, and it's the most predictive one available.
